A Destination of Growth: West Northants' Thriving Visitor Economy

As we celebrate English Tourism Week 2025, it’s the perfect time to shine a spotlight on West Northants’ rich history and heritage, world-class events, links to the big screen, and strategic initiatives, making it a top destination for tourists and a prime location for tourism businesses to thrive.

Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) Success

Northamptonshire’s official tourism body, Discover Northamptonshire, has recently achieved Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) accreditation, a significant milestone that promises to boost its tourism sector. This accreditation, granted by VisitEngland, enables a more coordinated and strategic approach to promoting the region. The LVEP status not only brings national recognition but also opens doors to additional support and funding, ensuring sustainable growth for the visitor economy. Already, a bespoke programme of business support has been established to amplify business growth in the visitor economy and tourism industry as well as attract new businesses to locate here.

The Great Fire of Northampton 350th Anniversary

A strong part of the attraction of visiting West Northants is its robust and comprehensive heritage, such as honouring the Great Fire of Northampton’s 350th Anniversary this year. A packed programme of events and activities is planned kicking off on May 29th with an Oak Apple Day parade and service at All Saints’ Church, featuring the annual hanging of an oak wreath in honor of King Charles II. Over the following five months, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including art exhibitions, music festivals and processions. There will also be a virtual trail on the Explore Northampton app which will transport users back to the day of the fire, offering an immersive historical experience.

Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025

This year, West Northants will play a pivotal role in the Women’s Rugby World Cup set to take place from August 22 to September 27 2025. Northampton will be hosting 6 games of this global event, which BBC Sport will be broadcasting live. The events will attract thousands of visitors, providing a significant boost to the local economy and showcasing West Northants’ role as an area of high potential and economic importance. The excitement and energy surrounding the event will further highlight West Northants on the global map, attracting sports enthusiasts and tourists alike. Hosting events such as this, as well as the Barclay’s Tour of Britain, as done recently, enhances the quality of life for local residents and delivers positive economic benefits for the entire area.

75th Anniversary of F1 at Silverstone

2025 is an important year as it’s the 75th anniversary of the Formula One. This summer, the Silverstone Festival will host a series of spectacular events to commemorate this milestone. The highlight will be the World Champions Collection, featuring an incredible display of title-winning cars from all 34 F1 Drivers’ World Champions. Additionally, the festival will include a special 75th Anniversary Race, showcasing a world record grid of 500cc Formula 3 cars. These events will not only celebrate the rich history of the Formula 1 but also demonstrate why West Northants is a premier destination for motorsport enthusiasts and tourism businesses alike. As of December 2024,  over 500,000 people have visited Silverstone since they first opened their doors in 2019, resulting in an overwhelmingly positive economic benefit for the area.
