Northampton Market Square
“Our markets team is now working hand-in-hand with our inward investment and economic growth service to inject fresh thinking into the market and turn the square into a vibrant, thriving space for local people. The Market Square is a hub that can bring people together while supporting small businesses and build on our local culture.”
Cllr James Petter, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Local Economy, Culture and Leisure at West Northamptonshire Council
In February 2023, work began on a £12.4 million regeneration project, funded in part by the Government’s Towns Fund. The vision: to create a modern, flexible, and welcoming civic space that honours the past while embracing the future.
Key features of the redevelopment included:
- New high-quality paving and landscaping
- 18 bespoke fixed market stalls with electricity, water, and lighting
- A shoe-inspired water fountain, celebrating Northampton’s shoemaking heritage
- Flexible event space for year-round community and cultural activities
- Enhanced seating, lighting, and planting to create a vibrant, accessible environment
The project also uncovered fascinating archaeological finds, including medieval shoes, pottery, and textiles, adding another layer of historical significance to the site
Now fully reopened, the Market Square is more than just a trading space – it’s a dynamic events venue and a beacon for local enterprise. From live music and food festivals to seasonal markets and cultural celebrations, the square is designed to host a wide range of activities that draw residents and visitors alike.
Local business leaders have praised the transformation as a “game-changer” for the town, with increased footfall and renewed confidence in the local economy.
The Market Square regeneration is a flagship project within a broader programme of investment across West Northants. From the Four Waterside and Marefair development to the STACK leisure destination and Abington Street public realm improvements, the area is undergoing a renaissance that blends heritage with innovation
These projects are not only revitalising town centres but also creating prime opportunities for investors, developers, and businesses looking to be part of a thriving, future-focused region.
